Surge arrester monitor

Since zinc oxide surge arresters have been widely used in China’s power system, numerous incidents have occurred; some severe accidents have even resulted in prolonged power outages and serious damage to other major power equipment, causing substantial property losses. According to incomplete statistics, the failure rate of both domestically produced and imported surge arresters exceeds a few per thousand. The primary causes of these failures are product quality issues, such as inadequate sealing that leads to moisture ingress and subsequent damage, poor valve-element quality, unreasonable parameter design, unsatisfactory pollution performance and potential distribution characteristics, as well as low rated voltage and high duty cycle, which together increase leakage current under continuous operating voltage and ultimately lead to device failure. The JCQ-10/600 surge arrester monitor is an integrated monitoring device designed for online monitoring of surge arrester leakage current and operation counts. It can record the number of arrester operations and continuously monitor leakage current, thereby enabling early detection of potential faults and helping to prevent accidents.

Structural Features

The JCQ-10/600 surge arrester monitor integrates a novel zinc oxide varistor, a custom-designed sampling unit, a high-performance electromagnetic counter, and a milliammeter, all sealed within a circular stainless steel housing. The enclosure provides excellent sealing, an aesthetically pleasing appearance, and superior corrosion resistance.

Main Electrical Performance

Thanks to the use of a new-type zinc oxide varistor, it exhibits characteristics such as low residual voltage at rated current, high surge current handling capability, high impedance under continuous operating voltage, and strong resistance to power-frequency overcurrent. The electrical performance is shown in the table below.

External Structure and Installation Dimensions

The JCQ-10/600 surge arrester monitor features a round stainless steel housing that is both aesthetically pleasing and offers excellent corrosion resistance and electromagnetic shielding. The high-voltage output terminal is led out from the rear via a small porcelain bushing, while the front panel is equipped with a large glass window for easy observation. This device is suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation; the mounting dimensions are shown in the figure, which are identical to those of the JS-8 counter. During installation, secure the monitor near the base of the surge arrester using M10×30 bolts at a convenient, level position for observation, and use this mounting location as the grounding point. Subsequently, connect the high-voltage output terminal to the lower flange of the surge arrester using M10×30 bolts and a busbar. When installing, ensure that the M10 nuts painted red are not loosened arbitrarily to maintain the seal.
